Production Logs Have Gotten A Bad Wrap

Unfortunately, in today's marketplace, there are those who consider production logging to be a hit or miss affair. There have been too many logs run with no success. We have seen, over and over, that there is much more involved in conducting a good test than running the tool up and down the hole at 30 fpm, 60 fpm, and 90 fpm. It pains me to be asked by clients to review a log just to inform them that the data acquired can not answer their test objectives.

On the other side of the desk, you have engineers who call a service provider and order a production log for a well. They give the service company directions to the well, what time to be there, and a wellbore diagram. Then are upset that their unmentioned test objectives are not met.

Preparation - Preparation - Preparation

Our industry today is obsessed with tool ratings, specifications, and software. Well, none of that matters if it is not used correctly. Good preparation for the test is the key to getting answers.

There is considerable work in properly preparing for a production log and it is well worth your time to participate. Your involvement is an absolute necessity. You have more knowledge of the well and systems than anyone else. No test is absolute and there are no guarantees. A procedure must be designed to maximize the opportunities to obtain the test objectives. Don't run a test that cannot possibly answer your questions. I feel just as successful advising a customer to save their money and not run a test if there is low confidence in meeting test objectives.
